Jacky Charles-Southcott is an Economist who graduated with a PhD in Economics from the University of Adelaide in 2017.  Her dissertation entitled: “Essays on Slavery, Inter-generational Mobility and the Persistence of Distrust and Inequality” examines whether former slave colonies in the Americas have lower levels of trust and presents this as a transmission mechanism through which historical slavery continues to impact contemporary economic development. Her dissertation also examines post-slavery events in the United States where there was a lack of civil rights such as the prohibition of black-white marriages, and its effects on the intergenerational mobility of African Americans and other racial minorities. Dr Charles-Southcott received an award of Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence from the University of Adelaide.

Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, Dr Charles-Southcott obtained a Master of Science degree (M.S.) in Economics from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc. with Honours) in Economics and Management from the University of the West Indies and worked as a Budget Analyst and Economist in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs in Saint Lucia for several years. Dr Charles also worked as the Investment Coordinating Officer with the St Lucia Ministry of Commerce and Investment and a Graduate Economist and Analyst with the South Australia Department for Innovation and Skills. Dr Charles is currently employed as a Senior Adviser with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade).
